Sooraj Barjatya’s Uunchai featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, and Danny Denzongpa in the lead roles, apart from being an ode to friendship, is about family bonding and companionship. The story is about four pals Amit (Amitabh Bachchan), Javed (Boman Irani), Om (Anupam Kher), and Bhupen (Danny Denzongpa), all senior citizens. After the demise of Bhupen, the other three decide to trek the Himalayas to fulfill the last wish of their departed friend knowing that it could be physically demanding. As they embark upon the expedition, challenges, both mental and physical, crop up making it tougher for them with every passing day. Whether or not they manage to scale the height despite the hurdles is what Uunchai is about. The best part of Uunchai is that the storyline manages to connect emotionally with the audience, although the pace of the movie is a deterrent. Apart from offering some really feel-good moments, the narrative also compels the audiences to think about issues confronting those in their 60s or 70s, which in many ways serves as an eye-opener. However, one felt that the movie spent too much time in introducing the characters, which could have been avoided. The stretched-out back stories too had an impact on the spontaneity of the script. Having said that, all the central characters, including Amitabh Bachchan, Boman Irani, Anupam Kher, Danny Denzongpa, and Neena Gupta performed exceedingly well and moved the audiences. Sarika and Parineeti Chopra too played their parts well.
